Winnipeg ‘The Plot Thickens’ 2012

Here is Jodi Plenart’s summary of our Winnipeg Event! Jodi Plenart is currently interning with our Just Growing Project.

On March 23rd and 24th, 13 Winnipeg residents participated in ‘The Plot Thickens’: a two day community gardening workshop held Crossroads Mennonite Brethren Church. Jen Kornelsen (A Rocha Community Organizer), Queenie Bei (A Rocha Community Garden Network Coordinator), and Kristine Zylstra-Moore (Fort Whyte Farms Program Coordinator) fearlessly led the group through a series of stimulating sessions.

From the basics of how to start a garden to establishing a community gardening mission, the workshop incorporated practical gardening tools with community gardening organization, providing relevant information for every level of gardener. The participants asked many questions and actively engaged in the topics being presented, allowing for insightful discussion and valuable networking. The workshop left each participant equipped with a community gardening manual to help guide them through their various gardening endeavours; a wealth of knowledge to tap into and to share with others; and a new network of fellow gardeners to broaden their community.

With spring in the air, ‘The Plot Thickens’ generated excitement for the return to the garden and served as a reminder that gardening harvests not just produce, but also community.
